1. Biggest Influence(s)?
Musicians include Ray Price and most of the fellas who worked for him...Faron Young, Willie Nelson, Johnny Bush, Johnny Paycheck, and Roger Miller, just to name a few. And the holy trinity of songwriters would have to include Harlan Howard, Hank Cochran, and Willie Nelson.
2. Favourite records/tracks old or new?
That’s tough to narrow down, but I can tell ya, the 4/4 shuffle is KING. The Ray Price / Cherokee Cowboys box set (covers a lot of my faves and is SOLID GOLD), Johnny Bush - Sound of a Heartache, Johnny Paycheck - The Little Darlin’ Years, just for starters...
3. What would you be if not a musician?
Oh, I’ve still got the day job - software dev. Not glamourous, but it pays the bills and lets me keep making the kinda music I wanna play.
4. Career high point so far?
Having one of my songs cut by the Cornell Hurd Band (on their “fanmail: from the lost planet” CD); making The Stepsiders’ first CD; playing at Ginny’s Little Longhorn in Austin, where they still remember what country music is supposed to sound like.
5. Perfect night off?
Taking in the town. On any given night here in Austin, I can go out and see at least a couple of my local musician friends / heroes in action.
6. Most recent CD in your CD player?
Brian Setzer - Rockabilly Riot Vol. 1: A Tribute to Sun Records. Niiice stuff.
7. Favourite book/film?
Films: Field of Dreams, Lonesome Dove, Silence of the Lambs, Night of the Hunter
Books: Catcher in the Rye, All the Pretty Horses, A Confederacy of Dunces
8. Whiskey - Jack or Jim?
Gotta go with Beam, given the choice of the two. Smooth...
