What cool cats have you met or jammed with?
Well James Burton comes down here. About two years ago I was on the road with Rick nelson and we played with Jerry Lee Lewis and I met Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash in Memphis around that time. I've met Fats Domino and Duane Eddy. As far as people I've jammed with, I'd have to say Brian Setzer (see photo on the right). He's come down here and jammed with us. I can't think of anyone else off the top of my head. I've met just about everybody I wanted to.
(All important question) Where do you get your hair cut?
There's a girl who comes down here who is really cool. . . her name is Kathy, she comes to all our shows. She cuts all the guys rockabilly haircuts.
Do you prefer performing covers or originals?
I really like doing my originals, that's sort of fun for me.
How many of the songs in your set are your own?
Basically I have two sets. One is my original set which is of course all my own songs. When we play down here we have to play for three hours so we include some Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Buddy Holly and a few country songs.
How often do you get to perform your original set?
Usually about three or four times a month at the 'Club Lingerie' or at the 'Palamino'. Lately I haven't been doing it because I've been busy going to school and then I was working on the Rosie Flores album (James plays bass/backing vocals). Right now I'm producing the 'Screaming Sirens'.
What do you go to school for?
I go to school for acting.
Why did you start Doghouse Records?
I started Doghouse during 1981, I just wanted my own label. We picked the name because of the doghouse bass.
What did you think of the film 'Roadhouse 66'?
I thought it was OK. It's kind of hard to judge because I was there. I thought it was fair. . . I didn't think it was a great movie.
Did you enjoy working on it?
Oh yeah, I really enjoyed it. I loved the people. The director was really into 'roots' music and that's why he wanted me in it, actually he was a fan of mine. It was a lot of fun, we had to go to Arizona to film it.
Is there a soundtrack album available?
There isn't. I don't know what happened but it never came out.
Do you hear much about British rockabilly bands?
Not as much as I used to. I heard more about them when the rockabilly scene out here was bigger. Nobody seems to talk about it much anymore.
Were there any bands you liked?
I quite liked 'Restless' because they had a sort of Gene Vincent sound. That was kind of cool. I thought the 'Shakin' Pyramids' were cool. I met those guys when they came out here and we played a show with them.
Finally, if you were given the chance to play one of the fifties artists in a film, who would it be?
They've been doing a lot of those lately. They are supposed to be doing the Eddie Cochran story with Rob Lowe, that's a part I would've liked. Roy Orbison is another one, I'd like to do his story.
Thanks James!
My pleasure.
